Upgrade yourself to ELITE -
Go to Mars High in the Sol system (0,0). Buy the mining laser as your
front laser. Now go to Phobos, the Mars moon and shoot at from between 0.5
and 1km and speed up time by a 100. After about 5 minutes of doing this
you should be an Elite!
Travel Further -
With this you can travel very far away with little fuel. Basically, there
is a bug in the program and you can make hyperspace jumps of roughly 656
lightyears and its multiples (1300, 2600, etc...)
Get some passengers on your ship, then try to buy a cheaper ship. You will
not be able to but you will still pay for the cheaper than yours, you will
make money.
