Pre-game preparations:
There are a few options to be aware of before you even
begin the game. First off, on a sliding difficulty scale
of dog to dog, this puppy is a doberman, so it's a good
idea to start on the normal difficulty setting. Be aware
though, that the game has three slightly different
player-selected ending confrontations, one of which can
only be chosen if you've played the game through on the
hardest setting and done "very well" by the game's
standards - whatever they are. There are also a couple
"failure" endings, one of which is actually cooler than
the "success" ending.
Fear Effect plays similarly to Resident Evil or Dino
Crisis, with a bit more sophistication for you
Euro-trash out there. You alternate between three
different characters, none of whom ever push a single
crate, an idea whose time has definitely come. In
addition to running and shooting, your character can
crouch, sneak (walking while crouched - nice and quiet),
turn quickly around, and dodge in four directions. One
character (Hana) even displays the ability to change
clothes, though you don't get to control this. Maybe in
the sequel...
Enemies:
The enemies in Fear Effect don't sit still. In fact,
they meander about like Mr. Magoo with a fistful of
Viagra. This means that in many cases, the enemy counts
in this walkthrough are arbitrary - if we say there's
three guys outside a door and you only kill two, take a
few steps forward and you'll probably find the third guy
around the corner. Or maybe we just can't count.
Controls:
Mastering your characters' basic moves is the key to
becoming successful at Fear Effect. Experiment with the
various preset key assignments until you find one you
are comfortable with. We recommend choosing the default
setup, which assigns Run, Crouch, and Evade to the
trigger buttons. However, it took us the better part of
disc one to figure out we liked this configuration best,
so you may have your own preferences.
Whatever layout you choose, be sure
you can hold down the evade button simultaneously with
both the run and crouch buttons. This will make you a
much harder target for all those nasty, unreasonable
folks who would rather kill you themselves than wait to
be rid of you by natural causes. Which is pretty much
everybody.
